What’s better than Christmas at Chateau Boswell? Harvest!
Harvest is in full swing here at Chateau Boswell and it is, to borrow from the Christmas carol, the most wonderful time of the year. Sweet, ripe fruit arrived in early September. Perhaps our most exciting arrival thus far has been this morning’s sleigh-full of Rita’s Crown Pinot Noir from the Santa Rita Hills. These grapes are destined for our Absolutely Eloise Pinot Noir and are already causing a stir. When grape growers projected the fruit’s ripening time and scheduled last night’s pick, it came with the following warning: We don’t have a truck headed to Napa for a few days. Freshness = Quality. So true to our relentless pursuit of quality, our own Matt Simpson drove the 12-hour round trip adventure to ferry the grapes to our crushpad this morning. Talk about dedication!
Our winemaking team, headed by Russell Bevan and Allison Nunnikhoven, were giddy with excitement as the Pinot Noir was unloaded into the winery. Turned onto sorting tables, the fruit is visually examined by our experienced staff before de-stemming. Our new optical sorter, Bucher Vaslin Vistalys, adds state of the art technology to old world methods. Instead of a second sorting table before crushing, grapes are inspected by the new Vistalys, which uses air blasts to eject raisins, rogue seeds or any berry that doesn’t match our specified range of profiles. While this use of technology saves energy and water (core goals of our certified green winery), efficiencies in production lead to more time for creativity in our pursuit of crafting extraordinary wines.
Chardonnay, Merlot, Petite Verdot and Cabernet are ripening nicely on the vine and spirits are sailing here at Chateau Boswell. Visit the winery soon to smell, taste and feel our favorite time of the year.
